Yoga for Rock Climbers
At Jeeva Yoga Studio
Yoga by a Climber for Climbers
Do you sometimes find intended beta bewildering? Wondering how you can bend yourself into a pretzel?
We’ve all been there, observing another climber smoothly stepping a foot to up to their armpit and smoothly rockingover, advancing up the wall with ease! Leaving you thinking, you couldn’t possibly keep our hips close to the wall while stepping even to waist height.
Climbers know they need the right mix of technique, flexibility, and mental and physical strength to reach their climbing goals. While some of this will simply take time and experience on the rock to build, some of it can be developed off of the rock in the gym or even on a yoga mat!
As a climber and a yogi, I have experienced first hand how yoga can transform climbing. As an experienced yoga teacher I can design a yoga practice for climbers to improve the mental and physical aspects of rock climbing.
This is an invitation to join me for a Yoga Foundations Class designed with climbers in mind at Jeeva Yoga Studio.
Through fun and energising sequences my Yoga Foundations classes teach the foundational movements of yoga to help you improve your flexibility, and strength, particularly the strength at end range of movements needed for climbing.
Yoga is also more than just the physical postures (asana), these classes are breath focussed, meaning we use breath techniques (pranayama) to assist us in our movements, a technique you can use for calm and focus while on the rock.
Whether you spend your free time at the crag or bouldering gym, your climbing will benefit from a little yoga. Yoga can help:
Increase your flexibility, especially in the hips and hamstrings.
Increase your core strength.
Increase your strength and control at end of range movements. Think a deep side lunge (skandasana in yoga) and how helpful this movement can be to stay close to the wall with a high step rockover.
Improve your ability to breathe deeply and stay calm on the wall, whether you are negotiating a tricky boulder problem or questioning your life choices when approaching the crux on a trad route!
Improved recovery after time on the rock.

About Me
Long before I became a yoga teacher, I became a rock climber.
First trying out rock climbing as a kid with my Dad at the local rope climbing gym in Adelaide, climbing was something I really got into during high school. Venturing out of the gym and onto real rock first at Morialta, Moonaire and then Arapiles.
Despite some injuries leaving me climbing much less frequently than I would have liked in my 20s, the last few years have had me return to climbing more regularly and harder than ever before.
As a yoga teacher with a decade of teaching experience and plenty of time on the rock, I now teach other rock climbers how they can use yoga to improve their climbing.
